United Pathways
Our collection of career development and apprenticeship programs are uniquely designed to help participants pave the way toward a rewarding career in aviation including Aviate for pilots, Calibrate for technical and maintenance technicians, and Innovate for digital technologists and cybersecurity professionals.
Recruitment and hiring
We recruit top talent from aviation organizations, college and university partners and industry conferences to continue hiring the best of the best who meet our rigorous standards.
We value United States Armed Forces members and veterans and we want them on our team. We’ve established strategic career pathway programs and partnerships to create opportunities for veterans and active military personnel, including:
United Military Pilot Program (UMPP) to establish a pathway for active-duty military pilots to become United First Officers.
The Technician Pathway Program gives U.S. Army reservists and students from three maintenance schools a direct pathway to technician jobs at the airline.
Partnered with RecruitMilitary, the U.S. Army’s Partnership For Your Success (PaYS) program, VetJobs, and USO to help recruit and transition Reservists and military personnel to civilian employment.
Business Resource Groups
Our employee-led Business Resource Groups build communities of belonging, opportunity and allyship for our team members while fostering leadership skills through programs, workshops and initiatives designed to advance their careers.
Black - BEACON (Black Excellence Amplified Continuously in Our Network) leads the engagement of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for various campus recruitment programming while increasing our customer and employer brand presence and elevating the awareness of early career and internship opportunities at United.
People with disabilities – Our Bridge BRG’s consulting and testing support from its membership group helped make our inflight entertainment more accessible than ever to people with visual impairments.
LGBTQ+ – Thanks to leadership from EQUAL, we’re the first airline to offer non-binary gender booking options and the group also aided the launch of revised uniform and appearance standards for customer-facing employees to better permit freedom of gender expression.
Multigenerational – Our Gen Trend BRG led a semiannual internal consultancy program to help develop our remote work policy and has provided actionable recommendations to address sustainability initiatives to accessibility and even generative AI.
Parents & caregivers - With Kinnect’s influence, we made it easier for families to sit together with our family seating policy and we work to shape the business and culture of United to be more family-friendly in how we care for our kin through every aspect of life, including travel.
Latino/Hispanic – Somos consulted on the addition of Spanish translation in our United mobile app and works with community partners in Chicago and beyond to help foster a stronger relationship between our airline and the Latino/Hispanic community.
Women – Our uIMPACT (Initiate Movement Purposeful Advancement Connect Together) BRG helped enhance our parental leave policy to provide more support to working parents and supports and mentors young girls to raise the profile of career opportunities in aviation.
Multicultural – UNITE has activated its broadly ranging ethnic and racial membership base to inform people strategies for the company, forging local community relationships, supporting employees’ career development, and helping us launch our BRGs for Black and Latino/Hispanic employees.
Veterans – In collaboration with our United4Veterans BRG, we removed a uniform requirement from our pre-boarding announcements to ensure military service members feel comfortable to come as they are when they fly with us.
Accessibility
We’ve enhanced our customer experience with a focus on making travel more accessible including launching a new digital tool for those traveling with wheelchairs, redesigning the United app to make it easier to use for people with visual disabilities, and offering a wide range of accessible features on our seatback entertainment system.
