A winter guide to South Lake Tahoe

Hemispheres StaffNovember 25, 2024

Tucked away in the Sierra Nevada mountains, South Lake Tahoe is a winter paradise hidden at the lake’s southern edge. From Olympic-worthy slopes and snowmobiling to shopping and relaxing resorts, the town is a paradise for both outdoor adventurers and luxury travelers. Here’s a quick guide to this small but not-so-quiet mountain town.

Ski and shop

Heavenly Ski Resort is exactly as it sounds. Home to South Lake Tahoe’s highest peak at 10,067 feet, both skiers and snowboarders travel from all over to witness its one-of-a-kind views. It’s not often one can race down miles of snowy trails that overlook an icy, shining lake. The resort even offers 4,800 acres of skiable terrain, making it the largest in the area.

After enough runs, ditch the ski boots and spend a few minutes exploring The Shops at Heavenly Village. Pacific Crest Gallery offers unique fine art and jewelry while Village Toys, with its nostalgic games and candy, is perfect for the kids.

See and do

Lake Tahoe might be infamous for its slopes, but there are plenty other adventures waiting. Sign up for the Summit Snowmobile Tour with Lake Tahoe Adventures, and spend two hours racing through Hope Valley and Charity Canyon. You’ll see views of the imposing Sierra Crest, piercing the sky at nearly 10,000 feet. Feeling less adventurous? Board the M.S. Dixie II paddlewheel ship at the Zephyr Cove Resort & Marina and take a relaxing cruise to beautiful Emerald Bay.

Eat and drink

Hungry? Keep it classic at Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen inside Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino, serving signature dishes from the multi-Michelin star chef. Deemed Tahoe’s favorite place to get a drink, try The Cocktail Corner. This award-winning cocktail lounge also offers contemporary food that rotates seasonally.

Sleep and spa

Those searching for luxury and relaxation will find it at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort. The spa offers a full menu of treatments, including Reiki Energy Healing, a CBD Vital Body Scrub and a Balancing Stone Massage, using locally sourced rocks. Or simply curl up in a suite, order room service and enjoy the opulent lake shores from afar.
